When to Replace Your AC Unit vs Repair It

The right call depends on the age of your system, the cost of the repair, and how well your home is staying cool.

When to Replace Your AC Unit vs Repair It

When your air conditioner breaks down on a 95-degree Houston afternoon, the last thing you want is to make a big financial decision under pressure. But that's exactly when most homeowners have to choose between a repair and a full replacement. Knowing what to look for ahead of time makes that call a lot easier.

The Age of Your System

Most central AC units are designed to last 15 to 20 years. In Houston's climate, where your system runs hard from April through October, you may be on the shorter end of that range. If your unit is 12 years old or older and needs a significant repair, replacement is often the smarter financial move. You'll spend less over time and get a more efficient system right away.

Signs It's Time to Replace

  • The repair estimate is more than half the cost of a new unit
  • Your system uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out in 2020, now expensive to source)
  • You're calling for repairs every season
  • Your energy bills keep climbing even though usage hasn't changed
  • The system struggles to cool your home evenly, even after service
  • It's 15 years old or older and the compressor has failed

When a Repair Still Makes Sense

Not every breakdown means it's time to replace. If your system is under 10 years old and the repair is something straightforward, like a capacitor, contactor, or fan motor, fixing it is usually the right call. These parts are inexpensive and the fix buys you several more years of reliable service.

A useful rule of thumb is the 5,000 rule: multiply the age of the unit by the cost of the repair. If the result is more than $5,000, lean toward replacement. For example, a 10-year-old system needing a $600 repair scores 6,000, which tips toward replacement. A 5-year-old system needing the same repair scores 3,000, which tips toward fixing it.

Don't Forget Efficiency

Modern AC units are significantly more efficient than systems installed 10 or 15 years ago. A new system with a high SEER2 rating can cut your cooling costs by 20 to 40 percent compared to an older unit running at the bottom of its efficiency range. In a Houston summer, that adds up fast.

If you're not sure which direction to go, a good technician will give you an honest assessment, not just a push toward the more expensive option. Get a second opinion if the recommendation doesn't feel right, and always ask for the repair cost in writing before agreeing to anything.
